FPGAs, the new test and measurement enabler?

When I was at IMS2012 recently in Montreal, there was some talk about how FPGAs are being used in test equipment to speed up performance and enable direct programming of the DUT. Are you using any equipment that offers these alternatives? How is it measuring up?

National Instruments has FPGA instruments that you can program yourself.

Of course, many (most?) companies use FPGAs to implement the T&M functions of their instruments.
